Sayonara Zoey's 'Fire 6-19-2010
Now that Zoey is nearly 100% potty trained, our next parenting endeavor was to eliminate Zoey's pacifier, or as she as always called it her "fire." Zoey always slept with her pacifier and she wanted to use it more during the day once Leo was born. Melissa bought a book called "The Paci Fairy" and read it to her almost every night for 6 weeks. The book encouraged the child to have the "Paci Fairy" pick up her pacifiers to give it to babies who need them and in exchange the child got a toy (or whatever the parent designated). We kept asking Zoey when she was ready for the 'Fire Fairy and one night she told us that she was ready tomorrow. We put her two remaining pacifiers on a plate and Melissa wrote a note to the fairy. Zoey had requested a "Dora the Explorer" big-girl bike. I didn't think this was going to work... sure she would take the new bike, but then I thought she would want the pacifier back. Although, she did ask for a pacifier that night and the next, we were surprised as to how easy the transition was. All we had to do, was remind her that it was picked up for the babies and she has not asked for it again! -Brian

That is so cool that it worked! I love that you let her decide when she was ready. A good reminder to me as my daughter enters her seventh month since I tried to potty train. ;)
